In Situ – Santa Maria Novella is More Than a Train Station

Santa Maria Novella in Florence

Santa Maria Novella is not just the name of the train station in Florence.  It is a wonderful basilica that happens to be right across the street from the train station.

So many masters have a hand in decorating this Dominican church that it is a must stop sight while visiting Florence.  It is called Novella which means new because it was built over the sight of a 9th-century oratory.

You will see Massaccio’s Trinity where linear perspective was used for the first time in painting, work done by Ghirlandaio’s famous assistant Michelangelo, Brunelleschi, Donatello, and amazing architecture.
